...Got to Hong Kong around 10pm friday night and rang the hostel i'd booked online (& paid a deposit) from there only to be told the website was wrong and they were overbooked, sorry, and here's the numbers of 2 other places to try!! Great, stranded late at night alone & I didn't need it to be honest on no sleep but what could i do?
I rang one, it was full but the 2nd one said they had 1 'small' room left but to hurry before it went as it was high season and there were 3 business fayres in town (just typical!)! It took me an hour to get there on trains and my heart sank when i walked into the Chung King mansions as it was a sort of huge slummy looking apartment complex with a maze of market type shops on the ground floor with a pervading stink of nasty body waste and chocked full of African men in robes, Indian men and chinese men who looked like itinerant workers.
Hong Kong
It was so crowded I had to wait in a huge queue for the lifts to get up to the floor i needed and all these guys were obviously staying in the many 'guesthouses' that occupied the 15 floors, i felt more and more uneasy and stressed as i was the only woman there and i was being stared at, and when i got to this guesthouse i couldn't believe it........the room on offer was down a zillion corridors, out thro an open air building site in the middle part of the complex complete with gutters of running water and rubbish & rats, then you had to squeeze sideways thro a small gap to get into another corridor and finally into laughingly what was called the room! It was in fact a windowless tiled bathroom of about 6' x 4' and triangular in shape with a single bed crammed in so tight you had to climb on the bed to access the loo which was on a raised platform, there was a ceiling fan with barely enough room to turn but it was so hot and claustrophobic, it wouldn't have helped anyway as it didn't even disturb the cobwebs hanging off the ventilation shaft running across the ceiling!
I really really didn't wanna take it even tho they were telling me HK was booked out so i went back downstairs only for an Indian guy to collar me & say he had just 1 room that was being rebuilt, so i went to look at that on the 15th floor & it was equally awful and just a building site with a bed frame propped against a wall and cement all over the floor and loo, so i had no choice as it was midnight by this time, i had to queue again for the lift to go back to the other room...........it was while i was in that queue with all these dodgy guys looking at me, hot humid and knackered that i cracked & was tearful........i wanted to be anywhere but there & felt really low and alone at that point.

Bahia de Hong Kong
Needless to say i didn't sleep again, not helped by the african guy in the next room who was praying & chanting out loud to mecca or islam for hours. I felt the need to push my bag against the door even tho it was a squeeze, but i felt so vulnerable so it was all i could do! Just wanted to get out of that room asap the next morning as it felt like a coffin, so got out to look round HK a bit but i wasn't really in a good frame of mind as you can imagine and still felt like shite..........times like this just rub in just how much i miss home, family and friends which is increasing by the day quite honestly! HK is expensive, manic, frenetic with 6.8million people + prob another million cos of the fayres who all seemed to be jostling me in the street and the constant noise is mind blowing.....can't say i like it a lot right now, but guess if i had a nice room instead of one i'm dreading going back to and a companion, oh and not sleep deprived, it would all look different!!
Moved to an alternative room that became free the next day but it was on a higher floor in the same building where the stink was even worse but i gained a whole 2ft in space and paid half as much again for the privilege!! It was only last night tho that i realised in my sleep deprived state that i left all my jewelery in a little purse on a shelf in the teeny room, but of course when i went to get it this morning, it had gone.......not a monetary loss as much as a sentimental loss as there were bits from all over the world.....c'est la vie, big sigh!
The visa is shockingly expensive & i wasn't able to access one quickly as it was a weekend (which quite honestly didn't even occur to me as weekends blend into weekdays when away), so i moved yet again this moring to a hostel dorm bed that i found by chance up the road.......anything to get out of stinky chung king mansion and its creepy male population!!
